This week the children have been focusing on "looking after our world" for our Understanding the World, we had a focus on plants. The children have learnt the parts of the plant and what it needs to grow. We have planted our own cress seeds so the children can watch the magic happen of their own plant growing! They will water it everyday and decide where to keep it! This is another incredible opportunity for all the children to see their learning in real life.

In Literacy, the story book the children have focused on is "Sam plants a sunflower" by Kate Petty and Axel Scheffler. The book explores how plants grow from a seed to a sunflower and what it needs to grow!

The children were they good at remembering what a plant needs to grow and remembering the parts of the plant- roots, stem, leaves and flower. The children used a song to remember this and it is very catchy!

Children created their own flowers by cutting and sticking and exploring their flower by explaining the parts and what they have learnt. It is a lovely opportunity at the end of the week to recap all the learning that has taken place over the week and see what the children have learnt! This develop their communication and language skills to articulate what they have learnt by using new vocabulary and putting it into a sentence or with a meaning.

In Maths, the children enjoyed counting the petals on the flower and marching it to the number on the pot. We do daily number counting from 0-10 followed by a quick maths session where all children answer a question to show their understanding and progression. The children also ordered plant relating pictures from smallest to biggest this allowed children to accommodate to their own learning by using the maximum of pictures to order themselves.

This week's fine motor skills activity for the children was to create their own play-dough flowers to use their hand to make them stronger! The children created some amazing flowers using a range of equipment. The week due to the lovely weather we have had lots of opportunities to go outside and can have inside- outside provision to the children to access, this develops their physical development of increasing their independence of putting on their own coat which all children can do independently but their next step is being able to zip their own coat.

The children also had the opportunity to plant their own flower using trowels, spades to scoop the soil into a pot and plant the flower too. In the investigation station children were able to explore a real plant and look at all the parts, the children really enjoy seeing their learning in real life.

Global Recycling Day

To celebrate Global Recycling Day, the children discussed a lot about why we recycle! The children sorted the rubbish into groups, designed their own bins and used recycled materials to make junk modelling, some of their ideas were amazing, we stuck them together then painted them to bring them to life. By celebrating this it develop the children's personal, social and emotional development by providing them with a sense of responsibility in the community of what they can do to make it a better world to live in.

"The whole planet would be a whole pile of rubbish if we don't clean" -Derren

Red Nose Day

We had an amazing Red Nose Day! The children loved seeing each other in red and enjoyed all the activities from nose stamping, nose balancing, red cake making, pin the nose on the person and lots more!
